Compression Springs

Materials and manufacturing of compression springs

Compression springs are technical components where material selection and manufacturing quality directly determine how reliably the spring performs in use. In the compression spring sector, brandgroup processes the complete range of materials – starting from cold-drawn and patented spring and stainless steels through to highest-strength, oil-tempered valve spring wire qualities. For compression springs, both round and profiled wire cross-sections can be used, for example Multi-Arc, when this is appropriate for the respective design. Brandgroup processes wire strengths for compression springs in a diameter range of 1.00 to 12.00 mm, enabling different dimensions and requirements to be covered. For compression springs to function consistently in series production, reproducible manufacturing is just as important as geometry, because even minor deviations can affect spring performance.

Surface treatments and lifetime optimisation for compression springs

For compression springs, brandgroup offers various surface treatments, including for example zinc flake coating, KTL or nickel plating. Such surfaces can be relevant depending on the operating conditions and requirements for corrosion protection or component surface quality, particularly when compression springs are used in demanding environments. In addition, a lifetime increase is possible for compression springs: through multi shot peening and additional nitriding, the service life can be extended and the wear characteristics improved. Which combination makes sense for compression springs always depends on the specific application and the loads involved. The key is that surface and lifetime measures for compression springs match the design and the overall system.

Designs and complementary solutions for compression springs

For compression springs, different designs, wire cross-sections and surfaces may be appropriate depending on requirements, as these determine spring behaviour, service life and component surface quality. If you need complementary components in addition to compression springs, brandgroup offers further solutions such as Tension springs, Torsion springs or Spring assemblies, to coordinate assemblies precisely and keep interfaces consistent. This allows compression springs and other spring types to be considered together, which in practice frequently leads to a more robust and durable overall solution.
